I Am An American

Specially dedicated to honor the Pearl Harbor Survivors on the 60th anniversary, Dec.7, 2001 - Veteran's Memorial Center in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA.

These United States were founded on the simple truth that a people must be free. Men signed their names and staked their lives on the strength of this belief. It would mean a new beginning, or the end of their great dream. But in that day they forged the way, so citizens to come could rise and say,

I am an American. I stand in the freedom won for me. I am an American. I know the price of liberty. And I'll defend this costly legacy.

Time has stood as witness to our country's sheer resolve to ensure security. Our cause has summoned us to graves in the earth, the sky and sea. For the hope of our tomorrows, under God and flag we'll serve. And in this day we'll mark the way, so citizens to come can rise and say,

I am an American. I stand in the freedom won for me. I am an American. I know the price of liberty. And I'll defend this costly legacy.

Though these days are filled with trouble, evil's knee will bow. The commitment of our fathers, is the calling for us now! *

I am an American. I stand in the freedom won for me. I am an American. I know the price of liberty. And I'll defend this costly legacy.

      * This line inspired by President George W. Bush's speech at the National Cathedral, September 14, 2001. The original line was, "The commitment of our fathers is now the calling of our time."
