Story Behind "I Am An American"

If it hadn't been for the opportunities to thank the Vietnam veterans in song, "I Am An American" may never have been written. On Easter Sunday, 2001, I began writing this song as an expression of my gratitude for all veterans who have given me, and every other citizen of this country, the very great privilege of living in freedom in this incredibly wonderful, though admittedly flawed, nation, which, for centuries, has been a place of hope and refuge for many peoples of the earth. After I received an invitation in the summer from Mr. David Brown of the Veterans Journal (San Diego, CA.) asking me to sing for the 60th anniversary (Dec. 7, 2001) of the Pearl Harbor Survivors, I decided to dedicate the song to them. The subsequent events of September 11th brought the reality of a tragic connection to the past - a surprise attack on American soil with similar numbers of casualties. However, there was at least one significant difference. The first was a military attack of questionable honor, while the other was an unjust, terrorist act on defenseless civilians, and thus without one shred of honor. Up until that date, I had been struggling with how to complete my song. Then it all became very clear, especially after hearing President Bush's message at the National Cathedral on September 14th, 2001.

Part of President Bush's remarks included the following line: "The commitment of our fathers is now the calling of our time." That declaration became the inspiration for the bridge section of my song. The events of the past and recent past were linked together, and they serve as a compass to direct our present action for our future hope.

As you may have noticed, or heard, each of my songs has made reference to God. I believe that each person, and every nation, who puts their hope and trust in Him will not be disappointed. A nation that humbly falls to its knees in prayer will be able to stand to its feet in strength. He will honor those who honor Him. May God bless America! Soli Deo Gloria!
